Fed: Garrett quits Midnight Oil after 25 years
PETER GARRETT has quit Australian rock band Midnight Oil after 25 years.
GARRETT has announced he'll leave Midnight Oil to pursue other challenges.
In a notice posted on the band's website this morning, GARRETT says the last 25 yearshave been incredibly fulfilling -- but it's time to move on.
The remaining members -- ROB HIRST, JIM MOGINIE, MARTIN ROTSEY, GARY MORRIS and BONESHILLMAN -- have vowed to continue making music together.
Midnight Oil has released a string of best-selling albums and singles to local andinternational acclaim since forming in 1977.
Their powerful music has always been complemented by political statements on causeslike the plight of homeless youth, the environment and rights of indigenous Australians.
They performed their land rights anthem Beds are Burning at the closing ceremony ofthe 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, wearing the word "sorry" printed on their shirts andtrousers.
In 1997, GARRETT was included on the National Trust's list of Living Treasures andwas the 2000 recipient of the Australian Humanitarian Foundation Award in the Environmentalcategory.
He has also served as president of the Australian Conservation Foundation.
